Who I Am

A decade of discovering Ireland's most beautiful routes — one gentle slope at a time

I've spent the last 14 years doing something most people think is unusual: I ride my bike very slowly on purpose. Not because I'm lazy, but because I'm testing routes for people who deserve better options than "just go on the main road." That's how I ended up becoming obsessed with accessible cycling.

It started in Cork. I was working with the Irish Heart Foundation, running health programmes for older adults. One day, a woman in her 70s mentioned she used to cycle everywhere — then she just… stopped. When I asked why, she said the routes near her weren't safe or interesting. That conversation stuck with me. I realised there were thousands of people like her: experienced cyclists, perfectly capable, but stuck at home because nobody had bothered to map routes that actually worked for them.

After completing my postgraduate diploma in Sustainable Transport at Trinity College Dublin in 2011, I started doing something radical: I got on my bike and rode. For months. Testing gradients, noting rest stops, checking surface conditions, talking to local café owners. Every route I mapped, I rode at least three times — in different seasons, different weather, different times of day.

My breakthrough came in 2015. I published a detailed guide to the Beara Peninsula loop — 50 kilometres of genuinely gorgeous cycling with manageable inclines. Cycling clubs shared it. Tourism boards got in touch. Suddenly, older cyclists had something real to work with. Not a marketing brochure. Actual information from someone who'd actually ridden every metre.

Over the next decade, I've documented routes from Cork to Donegal. I've consulted with bike-friendly hotels and restaurants. I've listened to feedback from hundreds of older cyclists about what actually matters: surface quality, gradient, scenery, water fountains, places to stop without feeling rushed. I've learned that "accessible" doesn't mean boring — it means thoughtful.

At onlinenewskansascity Ltd, I focus on what I do best: research, field testing, and creating content that gives older cyclists real confidence to explore routes like the Achill Island Atlantic Drive. Because cycling isn't just for the young and ambitious. It's for anyone who wants to see their country from a bike seat.

My Philosophy

How I work and what drives my research

Testing Matters More Than Theory

I don't create content from a desk. Every route I write about, I've ridden multiple times across different seasons. That means knowing where the potholes are, which cafés are actually welcoming, and whether that "gentle climb" is actually manageable on a grey Tuesday morning in March.

I'm not interested in marketing language. I'm interested in accuracy. If a route has one problematic section, I say so — and I suggest how to work around it. That's the kind of information older cyclists actually need.

Age Isn't a Limitation — It's Context

I've never believed that "accessible for older riders" means "short and boring." Some of my favourite routes are 50+ kilometres because they're genuinely interesting. The difference is thoughtful design: manageable gradients, good rest stops, beautiful scenery, and communities that welcome cyclists.

Accessibility isn't about making things easier. It's about removing unnecessary barriers so people can do what they want to do.

"Age shouldn't limit the joy of exploring Ireland's most beautiful landscapes by bike. My work is about making that possible."

Core Values

1

Honesty

Real information over marketing. If a route is challenging, I say so. If it's genuinely perfect for beginners, you'll know.

2

Field Work

Every route tested personally. Every detail verified. No assumptions, no shortcuts.

3

Community

Learning from riders, café owners, hotel staff, and local communities. Their feedback shapes everything I do.

4

Accessibility

Making beautiful cycling available to everyone. Not dumbed down. Just thoughtfully designed.
